Under the Mountain of All Names on the island of Tenshiir is the City of All Names, home of the gnomes. The entire mountain has been honeycombed with tunnels and chambers to create one of the largest cities in the archipelago. There are many entrances into the city but all of them are guarded and protected with the masterful illusions the gnome race is famous for. While most of the populace lives on the 'outskirts' of the city, the tunnels and passages most near to the surface, a large portion also live in the large hollowed out chamber in the center of the mountain. Most of the chamber was hewn by gnomish or dwarven hand but most speculate that the mountain is in fact a long dead volcano. The gnomes do not deny this rumor and have even gone lengths to support it, even carving out a large vent to the top of the mountain to let smoke and steam escape, giving the impression that the volcano is still active. Although a place to learn all arts and crafts, the City of All Names is most notable for it's extensive library on illusion magic and for the wonderful inventions and engineering marvels the gnomes are known for. It is home to a large Alchemists guild and many gnomes go on to practice the art of the bubbling potion. While most of this is in accord with gnomes from all over the world, the unique thing about Tenshiir gnomes is their view on names. While other gnomes tend to accumulate names faster then a barbarian does scars, Tenshiir gnomes have a different perspective, instead having to earn them. Whether by notable deed or mastery of a craft, every gnome must earn a name for themselves. Each gnome has the first 150 years of their lives to earn a name, after that they have 50 years of exile to earn it in the world, if a gnome still does not earn one by their 200th birthday then that gnome is no longer considered a gnome and is stricken from all records except one: The Book of Blank. The Book of Blank is the worst fate for a gnome. To have your given name written down within it's pages is to have one's soul ripped out of your body. Usually a gnome commits suicide before their 200th birthday instead of facing that grim fate. Fortunately, even with the gnome's extensive history, there are very few names written with the Book. There is no way to be sure, however, as the Book is not viewable to the public, the only service provided for those within it's pages.
